showcase for the technical students of the university of rotterdam and a stage for the city

professors: klaas van der molen and jan duursma

An exhibition object for the University of Rotterdam that serves as an educational tool for the students of Architecture. Incidentally, the object also serves as a stage for large events or a daily meeting place for students.

rdm, heijplaat

The object will be built in one of the halls of the former RDM shipyard in Heijplaat, Rotterdam. Multiple departments of the University of Rotterdam have already moved into this building.

The building consists of four discs that each represent their own construction method (steel, concrete, VSR and wood) and typology (factory, culture palace, office and residence) with corresponding cladding and interior finishes.

Every disc is a cross section showing the best materials of today and tomorrow. The construction will be built in collaboration with the University and is expected to be completed mid 2010.

The finishing touches will be done in collaboration with multiple suppliers who would like to exhibit their materials and applications. The materials are intended to be replaced frequently. The term frequently will be defined by each supplier separately and depends on the choice of material and developments on the market.

2010
